Maybe you have been looking at a copier in KC lately and have wondered about some of the lease paperwork that has been rolling by your desk. What are some of the ways that a typical customer will get ripped off in their copier contract and what can you do to make sure you don’t have the same problems.
- Lease Rollovers — Often there will be a provision which allows a lease company to extend you from 30 days to a whole year if you do not let them know “in writing” of your intent to return equipment. Make sure you know when this notification needs to occur by, or in their terms, you’ll miss the bus. This can cost a few hundred to many thousands of dollars.
- Automatic Rate Increases — Many leases have provisions where costs can go up by 5% to 10% per year. This gets to be expensive if it happens year after year!
- Wrong Equipment for Your Application — This is the primary cause of issues within the “Lease Ripoff World” because you are paying on a lease which should have cost 1/2 to 1/3 for what you actually needed.
The important thing to remember is that a lease is a CONTRACT. Because of this, you need to be careful about what you are signing, but on the flip side, contracts are negotiable.
